推薦人應(yīng)以該校或該公司抬頭的信紙及信封來撰寫信件，中文抬頭的信紙及信封亦可，如果真的沒有任何信紙及信封，可請推薦人附上名片并在推薦函上蓋上學(xué)校章或公司章(不過有些學(xué)校還是要有抬頭的信紙及信封)。
英國留學(xué)推薦信寫作的內(nèi)容則應(yīng)以英文撰寫并以黑色筆或利用電腦打字。內(nèi)容包括：
1、推薦人由下列各方面表達(dá)其對申請人的學(xué)業(yè)能力之看法：
a、以往的學(xué)業(yè)成就，包含考試成績
b、目前之表現(xiàn)
c、學(xué)術(shù)潛力，例如日后考試成績之推斷
2、推薦人應(yīng)就其所知之申請人能力表現(xiàn)，興趣及人格給予評論，此應(yīng)包括

c、個(gè)人特質(zhì)，如進(jìn)取心、獨(dú)立性、自我激勵(lì)、果斷力等

f、興趣之廣泛性、包括參與活動和社會組織
g、社交能力和個(gè)人關(guān)系
3、申請人對所申請之課程的適用性及對選讀科系之學(xué)習(xí)能力
4、申請人修完其課業(yè)后的生涯展望
如果是離校很久之成人申請者，推薦人可能很難就其學(xué)術(shù)能力給予評論。此時(shí)，可能提供申請個(gè)人能力與自我激勵(lì)能力的看法，且說明其認(rèn)為申請者可能應(yīng)付學(xué)位課程的理由，其工作經(jīng)歷及推薦人對申請者之工作績效也應(yīng)包括在內(nèi)。
